He will remain in office until the end of the QuakeCon festival.

The developer announced his decision on Twitter, assuring that his absence will not affect the company and upcoming games. He thanked his colleagues, noting that he was “incredibly lucky to work with the best people in the industry.”

All games, work on which has not yet been completed, are in very good hands. My departure will not affect the planned releases.

Id Software is full of incredibly talented people who will continue to make some of the best shooters in the world for many years to come.

After QuakeCon, I will announce my plans where I am going to leave and what I will do. Stay in touch.

Willits joined id in 1995 and managed to work on the first three Quake and The Ultimate Doom, as well as helping other studios create Strife and Hexen. He was also the lead designer for Doom 3, and took over as head of the studio in 2011, before John Carmack left.
