Digital Foundry on PS Classic: PAL versions of games run 17% slower than the original, and the image is constantly shaking 


Experts did not understand why Sony has included European versions in the list of games.

The Digital Foundry team tested the PlayStation Classic retro console. Experts were not satisfied with the system performance and game optimization. It also remains a mystery to them why six of the 20 preset titles are PAL versions.

Analog TV system PAL was distributed in the 1990s. It was used for televisions that operated at 50 Hz and were found in European countries. Modern consoles and TVs according to the HDTV standard operate at 60 Hz. Sony’s choice in favor of the PAL versions also raises questions because titles were developed in Japan or the USA, where the 60 Hz NTSC dominated.

When “porting” games to the PAL regions, the easiest thing was to slow down the gameplay. Most PAL games run at a lower speed (83.3% of NTSC). This applies to both the frame rate and the speed of the game process.

For some unknown reason, such versions of some games have been added to PlayStation Classic. Thus, for the first time, American gamers will “get to know” the slower European ports of six titles.

Digital Foundry specialists noted that all PlayStation Classic games have problems regardless of the version. Comparing R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 (NTSC) on a regular PlayStation and PS Classic, they found that the original console starts the game at a stable 30 fps with perfect frame pacing (uniform distribution of frames over time). On the PlayStation Classic, which works on the basis of the PCSX emulator, a trembling picture is displayed, and during the game the performance “sags”.

Following the results of the review, the DF employees concluded that the situation in the PAL games is even worse. Tekken 3 runs at 83.3% of the speed of the NTSC version. In addition, the picture shakes noticeably, and every sixth frame duplicates the existing one. On PS Classic there is not even the frame blending system Frame Blending, which was used in the PAL games PS2 versions for PS4. She made the frame shift smoother. In addition, every 50 milliseconds in Tekken 3 there are “bursts” of fps – the game consistently displays two identical frames.

At Jumping Flash, experts noticed that the performance on the PlayStation Classic sometimes drops to 30% compared to the original. The Digital Foundry team has already asked for a comment on Sony and asked why the developers decided to include the PAL version in the game list.

In the Russian stores PlayStation Classic should appear in early December. The price will be 7990 rubles.
