The Making of SCP-176 – Observed Time Loop

The work on the next art came to an end, and I decided to share with you the process of its creation, because I had to study a lot of material, and I had to spend a lot of time to find an interesting perspective in order to better convey the essence of the plot. I just need to unload all the info, so to speak, bursting my brain.

I started working with an idea, read the description of the object, delved into the details, consulted with Andrey Duksin (ARTSCP project). Then followed a long search for suitable references that would help make the scene dynamic and full. To search for references used the following resources:

Then there was the stage of sketches when I did a lot of sketches in order to find an interesting perspective and poses of the characters.

After I began to form some kind of understanding of how the work should look, and what it would be about, I began to place pre-prepared sculptures, blanks. This is done in order to save time on lighting and building perspectives. However, I do not advise newcomers to do the same, because you can get stuck in the render phase. To begin with, before applying 3D, you need to understand how light and perspective work, because when you try to finish something, you risk spoiling the work with curved objects falling out of the main direction of the lines, and this will be very noticeable.

Before starting to draw, I threw a lot of angles and productions, but now in 3D. A wide variety of types of lighting has been tested.

During the development process, additional elements were created that may be familiar to you if you subscribe to updates of my group.

It turned out to be an option in which I tried to connect and fit everything that was possible, but how I did not try, we could not achieve harmony.

In the end, it was decided to start all over again. At this time, an idea took shape in my head that was more complex in its implementation and did not correspond to the canon. I had to abandon some accents, in favor of dynamics and expressiveness. Of course, I drew art, violating the laws of composition, tonal relations, perspective construction, contrary to the generally accepted settings. A lot of sketches, different sketches of composition and lighting were drawn. To make the image more realistic, it became necessary to study the method of simulating the destruction of the glass structure, and an analysis was made of a number of references and the direction of gravitational particle fluxes from the flash, as a result of [DATA EXPUNGED], know that they are there!).

You can still improve the work for a long time and bring it to its logical conclusion every single day. Because every morning, when you stand up and see your work yesterday, tears come to you … No, not tears of pride for the work done, but tears of disappointment, because you can already do better (or can’t, but you start to see your mistakes) and everything is simple it needs to be redone, but you need to be able to curb your critical moods in time and move on, otherwise you can hang out with one job forever. Therefore, it was decided to stay on the option presented to you.

In the reflection you can see the action and flash. Broken glass rendered to give the image dynamics and diversity. Thanks to that very reflection, it was possible to combine the plan behind the scenes with the flash and show a close-up of the fighter and the scientist. This is what I achieved in the previous version, but due to the workload of elements, I could not fit everything in one composition so that it reads normally, since it is still necessary to take into account the format and readability of work.

The use of modeling in works, gives the artist a great advantage in terms of finding an interesting perspective and eliminates the calculation of the location of the light source and the correct perspective. However, it is necessary to understand the software and, so to speak, know the boundaries of reasonable. When working with the camera, it is important to choose the correct viewing angle to avoid distortion, and, also, not to twist the exposure in the “unnecessary direction”. Unless, of course, this is a particular author’s intention, when the loss of color space is intentionally used to underline an idea.

If you have any thoughts about the composition of the presented work or ideas that could complement it, I will be glad to get acquainted with your constructive suggestions, additions and ideas.

To my regret, there is not enough time for a beautiful design, but I hope that the article will be interesting and informative for you.
